Started in 2001, the Dot NAME universal domain extension is the only one supposed to be for personal sites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken third-level names remained active.
